John Evanson is a graduate of the University of Bristol, where he was a university organ scholar at St Mary Redcliffe Church and gained the ARCO diploma in 1996. After graduation he took a Lay Clerkship at the Cathedral (and briefly covered as Acting Organist and Choirmaster over the interregnum of 1998). In 2000 he began vocal studies in London with Janet Price and Timothy Barratt at the Royal Academy of Music, receiving the postgraduate performance diploma (PGDipRAM) in 2003. He has been accompanist for the Senior and Chamber Choirs of The Finchley Children’s Music Group since September 2000. With them he has performed on stages all over London and beyond, and accompanied them on their WH Smith Christmas chart-topping CD, Bethlehem Down. He is also Organist to the Mill Hill School Foundation. His next big organ project is a period-costumed Christmas concert in Moscow with English Philharmonia.
Based in London, he has been a principal artist with the touring chamber opera company, Diva Opera, and has been soloist for choirs and choral societies all over the UK. John also freelances with many professional choirs, most regularly St. Paul’s Cathedral and London Voices. He is a founder member of the 5-part, mixed-voice vocal group, The Mayfair Mints.
For fun, he plays BB-flat bass for East London Brass, a London and Southern Counties Championship section brass band.
